They really did. They’ve always been such an inspiration to me.

The people who compare The Hunger Games to Battle Royale need to read the actual books and realize there’s more to both stories than just “OMG! kids killing each other!!1!1!”.

Some characters from District 12, as I imagined them when I read the books. :)
Clockwise from the top: Gale, Haymitch, Peeta, Prim, her mother, Katniss.

As planned, today my good friend and I did some more urban exploring of Glasgow… and managed to get into the Bridgeton Jail/Police Station— the building Franz Ferdinand used as their key rehearsal space between the years 2002 and 2004. In the 19th century, the jail functioned as a holding cell, interrogation unit, and a morgue.

The jail was also where a large part of Franz’s debut album was written, as well as the site of one of their earliest gigs (cleverly titled: “Franz Ferdinand Cells Out”). After Franz left to tour the world, the building was occupied by other local artists and musicians in the area until about 2006, when it consequently became a health and safety hazard to even be there.

Inside the jail cells, the walls are graffitied with song lyrics, chord progressions, and abstract daubs of mural painting.

However, the building is in a very bad state. Walking along the corridors on the first floor (some of which have completely collapsed) towards the main courtroom, you have to be very careful where you step.

Now. My favorite part: The main courtroom. You wouldn’t believe the stuff we found there. Old photos and gig flyers dating as far back as 2002 were strewn across a table in the center of the room. I even found… some original homemade Franz t-shirts.

It was so weird. To think that it was a well-loved and important space at one point in time. And then, one day, the band just got up and left, leaving the entire place like a bizarre time capsule.

We met the landlord afterward quite by accident. He was a tough older man, very matter-of-fact, and fairly nice. I think it’s pretty safe to say he knew the guys back in the day.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. :)
